Description
A 13th-15thC large parish church (member of the Greater Churches Group) with Medieval misericords, carvings and stained glass. Tower open to the public with fine views.One of the largest parish churches (it is a member of the Greater Churches Group). 13th-15th Century with fine Medieval misericords, carvings and stained glass. One of England's outstanding churches, it was largely rebuilt in the 15th century on prosperity derived from a flourishing wool trade.
The church features soaring perpendicular arches and cathedral like dimensions. It is a truly magnificent building with features from Norman, Early English and Decorated periods.
It is noted for its unusual hexagonal porch, and it has good medieval and later stained glass. There are also elaborate misericords with vignettes of medieval life - mermaid, drinking party, highway robbery.
The ashes of the poet A. E. Housman are buried here.
It has a famous tower, open to the public with fine views. Mentioned inrecently published book 'England Thousand Best Churches' by Simon Jenkins and the church is among the top 20.
Open: Summer: 10am - 5.30pm. Winter: 11am - 4pm.
