New walking Festival launched in Mortimer Country
28th April 2014
This is a new initiative to highlight the huge number of walking opportunities in the Teme Valley, Mortimer Forest and the area surrounding Wigmore. There is a new leaflet available from local tourist offices, and full details are also on www.exploremortimercountry.com
The first walk of the festival is the “Walk in the Park” at Brampton Bryan on 4th May, and the series of guided walks runs until September. There are walks for all types of walkers, from local pub walks to long distance walks on The Mortimer Trail. Many of the walks also use local bus & rail services (Castle Connect buses & Heart of Wales trains), to extend the walks further afield, increase usage of local transport and boost eco tourism.
The programme includes walks through the battlefield of Mortimer Cross, exploration of Drovers Roads, & the Civil War sieges of Brampton Bryan & Hopton Castle, Roman forts, a walk to celebrate the launch of a new Walking book “Ludlow & Mortimer Country” written by local author Les Lumsdon and there is even a walk with an optional Wild Swim.
Jenny Beard, member of the Mortimer Country group says “Why not indulge in a few days of exploring Mortimer Country? Take your time to walk in the steps of Iron Age man; Roman armies; the Marcher Earls of Mortimer, monks trod and drover’s ways. For those who appreciate nature and wildlife ramble through medieval hunting grounds; follow rivers through lush water meadows and tumbling gorges; or walk through calm and restorative wooded glades. Legends echo along Mortimer Country’s ancient green ways; learn of these on the guided walks. Many of the walks can simply be done alone or with loved ones and friends. Each Mortimer Country walk opens up stunning views where you will find peace and tranquillity; delightful pubs and tearooms to take a break and enjoy delicious local food”
