Britain's Best Food Hall adds to Ludlow's delights

Britain's Best Food Hall adds to Ludlow's delights
Caravanners and motorhome owners with a passion for top quality food are being given an extra incentive to pay a visit to the picturesque Shropshire market town of Ludlow, which has a growing reputation as the gourmet capital of England.

Apart from staging hugely popular spring and autumn food festivals and having a range of award-winning restaurants, the town and surrounding area produce fantastic food and drink products.

To prove the point, Ludlow has won a prestigious national award. Ludlow Food Centre, located on the outskirts of town, has been named Britain’s Best Food Hall in The Farm Shop & Deli Awards, held for the first time this year.

The Food Centre is very popular with caravanners and motorhome owners who stay on five star Ludlow Touring Park, which is located nearby. The Food Centre actually runs exclusive discount offers for caravanners staying on the park, the latest of which is being devised for the 2014 tourist season.

Adding the 2014 award to the Farm Retail Association’s Farm Shop of The Year in 2013, the Food Centre opened seven years ago and brought an entirely new concept to the world of farm shops and food halls.

Surrounding its 4,000 square foot food hall are eight production kitchens, which employ local people to hand-make everything from cheese to bread and jam to pies. The kitchens boast Britain’s Best Blue Cheese called Remembered Hills, which is made by dairy team Dudley Martin and Paul Bedford using milk from the centre’s own cows.

Butchery Manager, John Brereton, has won national awards for his butchery skills with lamb and pork and also with products such as Beetroot Bacon, a favourite of celebrity chef Simon Rimmer on Channel 4s Sunday Brunch.

Located on the Earl of Plymouth Estate, the Food Centre employs more than 100 local people and is one of a group of businesses that include the Clive Hotel, cafe/restaurant Ludlow Kitchen and The Plant Centre.

With demand for pitches on Ludlow Touring Park always high for the town’s main festivals, the winter and early spring is a great time of the year to explore the town and surrounding Welsh Marches.

The 135-pitch park, a prestigious affiliated site of The Caravan Club, is located on a 20-acre site alongside the River Teme and A49 near Richards Castle. http://www.morris-leisure.co.uk/caravan-parks/ludlow/overview.htm

The main foodie events on Ludlow’s calendar are Ludlow Spring Food Festival, with beer, bangers and bread as its theme, from May 9-11, September 12-14 and Ludlow Food Festival from September 12-14. Other events to watch out for are Ludlow Shakespeare Festival from June 14-22, Ludlow Arts Festival from June 28-July 6 and Ludlow Mediaeval Christmas Fair from November 29-30.
