All on track for bank holiday and half-term fun at the SVR

All on track for bank holiday and half-term fun at the SVR
Steam trains great and small will be the stars of the show this spring bank holiday and half-term at the Severn Valley Railway

Visitors can board the Railway’s heritage steam and diesel locomotives, which are now running daily, to enjoy an exciting trip along the attraction’s scenic, 16-mile span from Kidderminster in Worcestershire to Bridgnorth in Shropshire, exploring any of the six beautifully-restored stations en-route.

If a ride on a full-sized steam train isn’t enough, visitors can enjoy a trip on the Coalyard Miniature Railway, at Kidderminster Station, which will be running - weather permitting, throughout the bank holiday and half-term week, from May 23rd – 31st. A small additional charge applies.

Visitors heading to Hampton Loade on a Sunday can see the Paddock Garden Railway in action – this 32mm gauge miniature railway is situated adjacent to the station and has been delighting visitors for more than 25 years.

Creative kids visiting during half-term week can pick up some free crayons and activity sheet and enter the SVR’s Design us a Birthday Card competition to mark the Railway’s Golden Jubilee, with some great prizes on offer.

A brand new SVR 50th Anniversary exhibition is the star attraction at The Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley, taking people on a journey through the first half-century of the SVR from its founding way back in 1965, through the highlights, pitfalls and challenges it has faced along the way to becoming the much-loved tourism attraction it is today.

While at The Engine House, budding rail enthusiasts can head to the Peter’s Railway Young Engineers Centre, packed with interactive exhibits and information on how a steam locomotive works, or get up close to the real thing by exploring the SVR’s reserve collection of full-size steam locomotives. There’s also mail to be sorted in the Travelling Post Office, and fun to be had on the outdoor, railway-themed play area.

The SVR’s marketing and communications manager, Clare Gibbard, said: “We’ve got steam trains of all sizes running this bank holiday and half-term.

“From taking an exciting trip along the line on one of our much-loved steam locomotives or taking a fun ride on the Coalyard Miniature Railway to learning about the history of our Railway and how our locomotives work – there’s lots of fun to be had for all the family.”

The SVR is this year marking half a century since a small group of young rail enthusiasts gathered in their local pub and decided to reopen the line which was closed just prior to the Beeching Axe in 1963. Five years later, a section of the track between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade was opened for steam locomotive passenger travel and the Severn Valley Railway was formed.

The SVR is marking the anniversary with a range of activities and events, including a Royal visit from HRH The Princess Royal, and a brand new Sounds of the 60s event, which will take place on August 14th -16th.
