Description

Burford House & Gardens is perfect destination for all the family, including the dog! With a children's playground, ornamental duck pond, shopping emporium, magnificent gardens, a relaxing Café-Bar, a garden centre and family-friendly events - there really is something for everyone.

Burford House, once a Georgian manor house set in seven acres of ornamental gardens, is now home to Burford House Shopping Emporium; two floors of quality retail shopping consisting of Colly Brook Fine Furnishings – made to measure curtains, blinds and soft furnishings, The Art of Reinvention – interiors and accessories for the home, Charlotte Designer Furniture – Tailor made sofas and chairs for your home, Burford House Gift Shop – quality gifts, pictures, cards and accessories for the home and garden, Connie & Tom Children's Boutique - fun, colour and innovation for babies to children up to the age of eight and Studio 83 – Ladies & Gentlemen's Hairdressing. The site also includes Salvaged - a salvage shop and yard with some interesting bygone items for sale. After pottering around the Shopping Emporium you can relax in the Café-Bar with either a home cooked breakfast, lunch, light snack, or a cuppa and a slice of cake or why not treat yourself to a cream tea. Burford House Garden Store offers quality plants at great prices for every season. There's also pots to bird care, seats to statues, trellis to tables and chairs – it's all here!

To the rear of the house, the former National Clematis Collection is being lovingly restored to its previous glory. The gardens were once home to one of the best collections of clematis in the country until a period of neglect led to its decline. Since 2013 an army of volunteers, aptly named the ‘Burford House Garden Angels’, have been working hard to restore the four acre gardens situated on the banks of the River Teme. The gardens were once home to around 300 different varieties of clematis and were designed and laid out in their current form by the late John Treasure in the 1950’s. There are now around 200 different varieties of clematis within the gardens; sometimes as many as 50 in flower at one time. One of the garden’s great wonders is the giant Wisteria Macrobotrys ‘Burford’, which in May cascades spectacularly down the back of the house. Planted originally in 1960, it fills the air with divine perfume and the racemes hang two feet in length. At one point in the garden, where the Ledwych Brook meets the River Teme, is the spot where the three counties of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire meet and if you search hard enough you can find the stone remains of an earlier Norman Castle. Entry to the gardens is by donation to Burford House’ two chosen charities.

Originally part of the estate, St. Mary's Burford Church, can be found next door to Burford House and is itself worth seeing, particularly for a fascinating triptych (three boarded painting) beside the alter. The earliest part of the Church is Saxon with extensive Victorian restoration with ancient Cornwall monuments.
