Ludlow's New Chocolatier

Ludlow's New Chocolatier
Daniel Jones, 24 from Bucknell, is Ludlow’s newest and only Master Chocolatier. Following the recent closure of Swan Chocolates, Daniel saw a niche in the local market and an opportunity to finally start his own chocolate business, and has chosen to base himself at Ludlow Food Centre just outside the town.

Working part time from the Food Centre’s Coffee Roasting Room, Daniel is one of only two private businesses in the Food Centre with the other units being managed by the Food Centre’s own staff which now exceed 90 local people.

Daniel’s plan to make chocolate has been cooking for two years even though he is still a full time Head Chef at the Harp Inn in Old Radnor. He has spent 6 months developing recipes and has created boxes of cleverly blended chocolates such as ‘Rapeseed Oil and Dukka’ and ‘Parsnip Fudge’, he says,

“By sourcing some of the world’s most exclusive and expensive cocoa, including Trinitario beans from the Dominican Republic and Criollo beans from Venezuela, I have been able to create chocolates of real character that don't compare to anything mass produced.  The whole process is done by hand and customers at the Food Centre can watch me tempering chocolate on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays until 3pm”

‘Daniel has worked with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and has even taught in Barbados during his short career.  He has always aspired to make chocolate and considered the foodie town of Ludlow to be the best place to start the new business,

“Ludlow is synonymous with food and the Food Centre is the perfect place to build my brand and get it noticed.”

Amongst the range, Daniel is also making three varieties of truffle, five varieties of bars, boxes of 16 and 25 specially blended chocolates and has just launched a special Christmas range, including hand painted chocolate baubles.  He has been making chocolates for 4 years and hopes that the Food Centre will give him the opportunity to develop the business.  Tom Hunt, Marketing Manager at the Food Centre says,

“Daniel is perfect for the Food Centre.  He is hand making his chocolates and our customers will love watching him at work.  He is making the finest quality chocolate imaginable and that fits in with our high standards brilliantly.  We wish him the very best of luck and admire his enthusiasm to start his own business in these difficult financial times”

Daniel will be doing tastings of his chocolates at the Food Centre’s Christmas Preview Evenings on December 1st and 8th from 5:30pm-8pm.
