Giant Enginuitree at Gorgeous Craft Fair

Giant Enginuitree at Gorgeous Craft Fair
Enginuity, near Ironbridge 22nd and 23rd November

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Gorgeous Contemporary Christmas Craft and Fine Food Fair at Enginuity near Ironbridge and with the generous support of Arts Council England, installation artist Dan Fox is creating a giant musical festive ‘Enginuitree’ on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November.

Over the two day event Enginuitree will grow to a height of 12 metres as members of the public make and add unique, laser-cut snowflake decorations to the branches. Around the base of the tree will be specially commissioned artist-made willow and hazel animals, braziers and roasting chestnuts, along with two wandering minstrels, all creating a magical and inspiring festive scene.

Traci Dix-Williams, Director of Operations at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust explained: “As it’s a very special year for Gorgeous, the Museum wanted to work with a contemporary artist and create something truly spectacular. We also wanted the artist to allow visitors of all ages to be a part of the creative process.

“Dan Fox has created an innovative design for our Festive Enginuitree and one that takes inspiration from Enginuity with the base structure made from a former military pneumatic mast which will form the ‘trunk’. This will be clad by artist Hannah Fox with a tailored fabric suit that adds colour, movement, texture and form. The ‘branches’ of the tree will be made of steel wire, once again covered with fabric. These will be attached to the mast creating a wonderful traditional Christmas tree shape. On the top of the mast will be a large tin star lantern, commissioned from artist Bob Fisher, with tin representing the 10th anniversary of the event.”

Over the two days visitors to Gorgeous will be able to work with the artists and create intricate plywood snowflakes by using the museum’s laser cutter in the Fab Lab. The individual snowflakes will then be hung onto the ‘branches’ of the tree. As the tree grows, more branches and snowflakes will be added until the tree reaches its full height, with a maximum of 64 branches by the end of the second day.

The workshops will be included in the admission fee for Gorgeous and open to all ages.

Meanwhile visitors can find unique artisan made Christmas gifts and locally produced foods suitable for all budgets. In the festively decked main hall and spilling out into the adjacent courtyard, exhibitors will be selling beautiful and unusual pieces of jewellery, glassware, ceramics, textiles and metal work, as well as hand-made wrapping paper, cards and crackers. Tempting local foods will also be available to buy and visitors can watch wonderful Festive Floral Art demonstrations by local florist Gwhizz.

Entry is £2.50 per person (under 5s go free), which includes admission to Enginuity. The fair will be open from 10am – 5pm on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November.
