Festival of the Gloucester Old Spot Pig

Festival of the Gloucester Old Spot Pig
On Saturday July 20th 2013 the second Festival of the Gloucester Old Spot Pig will take place at Ludlow Food Centre and will include all things spotty and piggy.

The team at the Food Centre along with other Old Spot fanatics are holding a celebration that will include workshops, cooking demonstrations, competitions and fun for all the family.  There will be the ubiquitous pig roast and BBQ but visitors will also able to see the pigs, take part in tasting workshops, make their own sausages and learn skills from award winning producers.  Guests include Maynard Davis, of Maynard’s Bacon, Will Holland of La Becasse and Ladies in Pigs with more yet to be confirmed. There will be plenty of fun for children too with activities, face painting and games in the Centre’s new picnic area.

The Earl of Plymouth’s Estate that surrounds the Ludlow Food Centre has been developing a 13 acre site opposite the Centre in to a picnic area.  The site has been planted with rare types of fruit trees that will create an orchard and there are lovely walks alongside the Rive Onny.  For the festival the Centre will unveil the new picnic site which will be the venue for kids games, a pig themed marquee, a bouncy castle and the Estate’s Gloucester Old Spot pigs.

In the evening  the Food Centre’s restaurant, Ludlow Kitchen, are having a post-event dinner for people to enjoy a Gloucester Old Spot themed tasting menu for just £30.  The meal will be cooked by head chef Damien Mc Namara and promises to be an excellent experience. Dishes will include scallops with black pudding, braised pork shoulder and pork belly.  There are 45 places for a breakfast experience where visitors can enjoy a full breakfast at the Ludlow Kitchen and taste different varieties of coffee roasted on the premises for £10.  This will include Gloucester Old Spot bacon, sausage, black pudding and white pudding all made by the Centre’s butchers along with local eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms.

Tom Hunt, Marketing Manager for the Centre explains,

‘We want to showcase the quality of British Pork and in our opinion Gloucester Old Spot is the best.  It is really exciting to be opening the picnic site for the first time and we hope people enjoy what we have created.   Most of all we want to have fun and create a great summer festival atmosphere’
